# Tier rules

> Configure accuracy and fluency bands that assign Tier 1–3 on Languages.

**Tier rules** are the per-period accuracy and fluency bands that place a student in **Tier 1**, **Tier 2**, or **Tier 3** after an assessment. Admins set them on the [Languages](/hflow/languages) page for each language, grade, and school year.

## How to adjust tier rules

1. In the header, click **Languages**.
2. Select a language, then choose **School Year** and **Grade Level**.
3. Review **Performance Tiers** for Beginning, Middle, and End of Year (**Tier 1**, **Tier 2**, **Tier 3**).
4. Click **Edit Tiers**, adjust sliders for each tier and period, then click **Save Changes**.

New and updated assessments classify using the bands you saved for that scope. Move sliders carefully so bands do not overlap unless your school policy intends that. Overlapping ranges can produce unexpected placements.

Benchmark lines on reading charts follow **Tier 1** minimums; see [Benchmarks](/hflow/configuration/benchmarks).

## Configuration menu note

A **Tier Rules** item under **Configuration** may appear in some layouts as a legacy or read-only entry. Day-to-day editing happens on **Languages**; use that page unless your administrator directs you elsewhere.

For interpretive guidance on tier codes. See [Tiers overview](/hflow/tiers).
