# Benchmarks

> How reading chart benchmark lines relate to Tier 1 on Languages.

Admins use **benchmark** targets as reference lines on reading charts (for example on a student’s progress report or in family communications). You do not enter benchmark numbers on a separate form, hFlow derives them from **Tier 1** accuracy and fluency on the [Languages](/hflow/languages) page for each period (BOY, MOY, EOY).

## How to change benchmark targets

1. In the header, click **Languages**.
2. Select a language, then choose **School Year** and **Grade Level**.
3. Under **Performance Tiers**, click **Edit Tiers** and adjust **Tier 1** accuracy and fluency for each period your team cares about.
4. Click **Save Changes**.

Scroll to the **Benchmarks** table on the same page. **Target Accuracy** and **Target Fluency** for Beginning, Middle, and End of Year update to match Tier 1. After you save, reading visuals use those values as dashed benchmark lines when a student’s grade, language, and school year match.

## Read-only benchmark summary (optional)

Some organizations also expose **Configuration** → **Benchmarks** as a read-only list filtered by school year, grade, and language. Values there mirror what Tier 1 defines. You cannot edit them on that screen. When in doubt, change tiers on **Languages**.

For what tier labels mean in reports and rosters. See [Tiers overview](/hflow/tiers). For chart behavior. See [Student progress charts](/hflow/students/student-progress-charts).
